The Improbable Life of Edmonia Lewis
a salon led by
Christian Crouch, Bard College & Academy master

Born in 1843 to an African American father and a Chippewa mother, orphaned at five, and raised by her mother's nomadic tribe, Edmonia Lewis went on to become an internationally recognized sculptor. Until recently, history forgot her.
